Description
This is a highly significant piece of rock-and-roll history
1. The Ill-Fated “First Show” of the Kaleidoscope
April 14–16, 1967, was scheduled to be the grand opening weekend of the Kaleidoscope (originally located at 1228 Vine Street in Hollywood). However, due to last-minute legal battles and city injunctions, the venue was forced to relocate the actual performances four miles away to the Embassy Ballroom at the Ambassador Hotel.
This contract is dated April 16, 1967 (the Sunday afternoon show), it is the exact legal instrument tying Jefferson Airplane to one of the most legendary, chaotic, and heavily chronicled opening weekends in Southern California rock history.
2. The Legendary Triple-Bill
This particular date wasn’t just any Jefferson Airplane gig; they headlined a historic triple-bill that featured:
-
- Jefferson Airplane (riding high on the newly released Surrealistic Pillow)
- The Grateful Dead (who had just released their self-titled debut album one month prior)
- Canned Heat (the LA hometown blues-rock legends managed by Skip Taylor, the man who countersigned your contract)
An incredibly piece of rock and roll history
